St. John’s School is a proud member of the Orange County Parochial School League (“OCPSL”), an association of eight parochial schools located throughout Orange County. The OCPSL is run by voluntary members and includes a Commissioner, a Cheerleading Director, and several basketball League Directors. Further information about the OCPSL can be found at its website address: www.ocpsl.org.

Beginning in fifth grade, our students have the opportunity to represent the school by playing basketball games against other OCPSL teams. St. John’s fields four basketball teams: fifth and sixth grade students comprise the Junior Varsity (“JV”) teams (a girls JV team and a boys’ JV team), and the seventh and eighth graders comprise the Varsity teams (a girls’ varsity team and a boys’ varsity team). For each of the four teams, the OCPSL is broken down into two divisions and, at the end of the regular season, the best team from each division play against one another in what is called the “Banner Game”. The winner of the Banner Gamer receives the OCPSL’s championship banner, which is then hung in the winner’s gym. As you can see by visiting our gym, St. John’s has had a great deal of success over the years. For example, our teams have won eight banners in the last five seasons. In addition to the Banner Game, each OCPSL team is eligible to participate in the post-season playoffs with the final games taking place at Mount Saint Mary College in mid-March. Since the 2003-2004 season alone, St. John’s teams have won a total of eight league championships.

For those students in the third and fourth grade, St. John’s also offers an intramural basketball program which runs from late winter to early spring each year. This program is designed to accomplish three main goals: first, to teach basic fundamental skills and rules of the sport; second, to prepare the children for St. John’s JV basketball teams that begin in fifth grade; and lastly, and most importantly, to encourage teamwork and good sportsmanship.  We encourage all students to give the intramural program a try and every effort is made to insure everyone gets equal practice and playing time.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact Tom Gough (St. John’s Athletic Director) at 845-590-1960.
